The buzz entering court for today's appellate arguments in the lawsuit to determine whether e-mails exchanged between Gov. Jon S. Corzine and labor leader Carla Katz should be made public was that Attorney General Anne Milgram was arguing the case herself.

That left some veterans of the political/judicial scene wondering when the last time a sitting New Jersey attorney general argued a case.

General consensus was that it dated back to a Republican administration -- either Peter Verniero in the 1990s or Irwin Kimmelman in the 1980s. But it turns out history books weren't needed to answer this trivia: Attorney General Zulima Farber in her eight-month stint as attorney general in 2006 argued before the Supreme Court to justify the school aid Gov. Jon S. Corzine was proposing.

Corzine attended that two-hour hearing.
